Can You Predict 4/20 Sales? Here Are 5 Data Points From Last Year

Who buys most of the weed on 4/20 and how much do they purchase?

In addition to our usual 4/20 roundups and coverage of deals and events, this year we are tapping into weed culture and business platforms as well to help educate consumers and industry insiders alike on trends and more.

For this installment, we looked to Sweed, a retail platform which furnished some interesting national data regarding who purchases on 4/20 along with other details from last year. Below are five points that we pulled from their report.

1 – Younger shoppers dominate, but older buyers matter more than you think. In 2024, adults 21–30 made up 35% of total sales, but customers aged 31–50 collectively accounted for nearly 50%.

2 – First-time buyers accounted for 35% of April’s customer base—a major opportunity for long-term loyalty.

3 – Men still lead in volume, but women are gaining share. Male consumers accounted for around 52% of total purchases, while female consumers made up 46%.

4 – The week of April 15 – 21, 2024 – saw the most substantial spike in cannabis retail activity. Compared to the week prior (April 8 – 14): Gross receipts jumped by ~38%, gross sales by ~58%, and products sold by over 60% compared to the previous week.

5 – Post 4/20 sales plummeted (gross sales dropped ~46%), proving there’s no second chance at getting it right.
