A glassblowing and hash culture spectacle honoring the Grateful Dead at 60
American Beauty at Stoked in Bridgeport, Connecticut last month was every Deadhead’s dream. The event celebrated the Grateful Dead’s 60th anniversary in true spirit—with glass and hash.
More than 50 artists created unique pieces honoring Jerry Garcia and the band—legends like Bob Snodgrass and family, Jerry Jelly, Tammy Baller, AKM, Banjo, and Goober Gabe, just to name a few. Many of the artists collaborated on pieces, making their output more unique and desired. The camaraderie that those partnerships build between glass artists is something I’ve always admired and respected.
A few of my favorite pieces were made by Hicdogg, namely the “Uncle Sam” skull. The colorways really spoke to me and that song always rings home.

I’d also like to high-note the skull from Rocka with the rose flower crown, which reminded me of my mom, Rose. Many of the pieces were scooped up fast, all as new ones came to life. A dozen artists were live on the torch throughout the night, which is what makes Stoked so special; it’s a gallery, a glassblowing studio, and a private event space all in one. I got to watch longtime friends Tammy Baller and Jerry Kelly melt right in front of me.
Grateful Dead tie-dyes were everywhere, with smiling faces around every corner. There was even a grilled cheese cart serving up hot sandwiches while a live band played classic Dead tunes. You know I had to eat a few in the breeze, which was absolute perfection. As was the lot being filled with shakedown street vendors, crafters, and makers. I even got to play some GD trivia and won tickets to a show in upstate NY on Halloween.

I enjoyed the private consumption area throughout the event, along with the chance to watch some of my favorite glassblowers throw down right in front of me. Heady rigs filled every table; only standing room remained. The atmosphere was very friendly, while the bar kept everybody high-drated.
“The Grateful Dead are extremely influential in the borosilicate glass art community, so inspiration for this show is abundant.” Charlie, one of the Stoked owners, explained the inspiration for the gathering. “It’s an honor to be able to showcase incredible work from talented artists all across the world while paying homage to the band that inspired so many.”
