Years from now, when there are finally some licensed cannabis consumption joints around the Bay State, many will recall the Summit Lounge as the original in Massachusetts. There have been other spots where you can smoke for sure, but none with even close to the longevity of Worcester’s own. Not to mention authenticity, as it has truly served as a rare crossroads for the legacy and legal realms of the New England cannabis community.
Eric Casey broke the story for the Worcester Business Journal this week: “[Owner Kyle] Moon told WBJ rising costs and the limitations of the Water Street space drove the decision. The location doesn’t have enough space to accommodate his plans for cannabis consumption and food.”
Noting that “the venue was the state’s first known private cannabis consumption lounge when it opened in 2018,” the sendoff also notes that Moon isn’t exactly throwing in the towel. The following is from the official announcement posted on the Summit’s socials …
“After eight amazing years of operation the time has come for us to close our doors and look towards the future. Unfortunately, sometimes growth requires a step back to take massive leaps forward and that’s where we are at right now.”
It continued, promisingly: “Summit will return some day, in a different fashion but for now we will be ceasing operations on Nov. 1. It’s not goodbye, it’s see you later, but for now let’s send this spot off in proper fashion with a wall to wall smoke out with all your favorite people.”
That exit party will take place on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 5pm to closing. Free food, free entry, and we bet there’s going to be weed there.
Thanks to Kyle and the whole crew at the lounge for everything they have done for the new green frontier, and for TJM specifically as well. Our recent “No on 8” event there was a winner, and we look forward to catching up with Moon soon to discuss not only the Summit’s future, but his thoughts on the social consumption horizon in general.
