With products like these, “we will eventually educate the market and its consumers to the dangers of untested unregulated products turning up in smoke shops and gas stations alike”
In a world increasingly drawn to natural healing, Mystic Fruits stands out as a brand rooted in authenticity, science, and compassion. Founded by Cody Reeves, a certified mycologist, and his wife Janet McAllister, the company blends the wisdom of fungi, cannabinoids, and essential oils into holistic remedies designed to nurture the mind, body, and spirit. Their dedication to transparency, education, and integrity has not only earned them recognition in the functional wellness space, but also positioned them as pioneers in the movement toward safe, data driven psychedelic and mushroom products. We asked how they do it.
What inspired the creation of the brand, and how does that philosophy shape everything you produce?
My wife and I were looking for natural ways to better take care of ourselves. The answer actually arose in the form of many mushrooms like chaga, reishi and lion’s mane, which we combined into what is now our 7 Mushroom Powder. From there it seemed only natural to bring my wife’s knowledge of cannabinoids and essential oils to the mushroom market. Once we were seeing success through our own use, people started to take interest and ask where to get the things we were making. We instantly noticed the impact it was making in other people’s lives and decided to dedicate our business to helping as many people as possible through the powers of natural medicine.
You’re entering the Psychedelic Cup this year. What does that mean for Mystic Fruits, and what message do you hope to share with the community through your participation?
This award actually means a lot to me because it starts to address a huge issue facing the mushroom community—transparency and accurate dosing in edibles. This test is data driven and is awarded to the product with the lowest RST% (relative standard of deviation.) We scored a .581% with our gummies, one of the lowest on record. We hope with results like these, we will eventually educate the market and its consumers to the dangers of untested unregulated products turning up in smoke shops and gas stations alike. We always aim to set a new high bar in excellence and product safety, the accolades are just acknowledgements for the hard work we put in to do so.
As a company founded by a certified mycologist, how does your scientific background influence the development and quality of your functional mushroom and microdose products?
The tag line for Mystic Fruits is: research, education, and enlightenment. If one were serious about becoming a master glass blower, you’d probably start by learning everything you can about technique and an understanding of how every move affects the finished product. The same applies to mushrooms. Learning how to manipulate environments and isolate certain desirable traits is wholly beneficial to creating superior products. With an ability to interpret labs, and data reports, [we are] able to be more accurate with my dosing and to give reliable guidelines to our consumers.
Mystic Fruits focuses on natural alternatives to pharmaceuticals. What challenges have you faced in educating consumers about holistic health, and how have you overcome them?
The lack of education regarding natural medicines among the majority of healthcare providers is downright scary. We often find ourselves being the sole source of research driven information on a lot of these things for people. We very rarely have a patient on no medication and the certification I have in psilocybin pharmacology plays an integral role in being able to advise people to the effects between certain medications and the medicines found in mushrooms. Not enough doctors have this data and until we stop treating it as “quack science” and include it in modern healthcare curriculums we will always be at odds against the public healthcare system.
Looking ahead, how do you see the future of plant- and fungi-based wellness evolving and what role will Mystic Fruits play in that movement?
Despite my many gripes against the lack of care for harm reduction practices, education, safety, and integrity that runs rampant in the current unregulated market, I stay hopeful that more companies like ours with a sincere dedication to improving the well being of our customers will rise to the top. Improvements to packaging, testing, and the inevitable regulations that will come with a legal market keeps our hopes high. We believe that everyone deserves quality, trustworthy medicine no matter where they live. This all starts with access to research, an educated public and healthcare system, and an enlightenment of the people and its governing bodies to a world that could be healed on its own through natural remedies.
